On Friday, October 9, Mariia joined Maya Trips for a Phool Batti traditional incense-making workshop in Kathmandu. Visiting from Ukraine, Mariia was gifted this experience by a friend as a birthday present, turning a special occasion into an opportunity to discover a little of Nepal’s everyday culture. Escorted by Saloni, she stepped into the world of a traditional craft that has been part of Nepali life for generations.
Discover the Story Behind the Scent
In Nepal, incense is more than just a pleasant fragrance. It is part of daily prayers, temple rituals, and quiet moments at home.
Phool Batti, a traditional rope-shaped incense, is made using natural ingredients such as herbs and plant-based materials. Before getting started, Mariia was introduced to the craft and learned about its place in local traditions, giving her a glimpse into a practice that continues to bring people closer to their daily rituals.

A Little Patience, a Little Practice, and Something Made by You
Then came the fun part: trying it herself!
With guidance from a local instructor, Mariia explored the process of preparing the incense mixture and shaping it into thin ropes. What might look simple at first takes a little patience and practice. Each step offers something new to learn, making the experience as much about enjoying the process as it is about the finished product.
Rather than simply watching a demonstration, she had the opportunity to get hands-on, discover the technique, and experience the satisfaction of creating something herself.

More Than a Workshop
Some of the most memorable travel experiences are not always found in famous landmarks. Sometimes, they come from sitting down with a local craft, learning a new skill, and discovering the stories behind everyday traditions. Mariia enjoyed an opportunity to engage with a traditional Nepali practice in a relaxed setting. The experience offered a different perspective on Kathmandu, one shaped by local knowledge, simple moments, and the joy of trying something new. And with the workshop gifted to her for her birthday, the experience became a thoughtful way to celebrate through discovery.
