On April 19, 2026, Daniela from Austria joined Maya Trips for a 12-day horseback trekking journey through Nepal’s Mustang region. Traveling through remote Himalayan landscapes on horseback, the experience combined cultural exploration, mountain riding, spiritual sites, and traditional village life across one of Nepal’s most historically preserved regions.
What Is Included in the Horse Back Trekking in Mustang, Nepal Tour?
This journey is designed for a traveler seeking a deeper connection with the landscapes, culture, and traditions of Mustang. Combining horseback trekking, village exploration, and cultural encounters, the experience offered an immersive way to travel through the remote Himalayan region at a steady and unhurried pace.
Arrival in Kathmandu
Daniela arrived in Kathmandu via international flight and was welcomed in the capital nestled in the valley at 1,400m. After check-in at Hotel Tibet, the journey began with time to settle into the rhythm of Nepal before the mountain adventure ahead.
Kathmandu Cultural Exploration
The following day was dedicated to exploring the cultural heart of the city. Accompanied by Ms. Pramila, whose local knowledge and storytelling brought each site to life, Daniela visited some of Kathmandu’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. Her guidance provided valuable context on the history, traditions, and living culture behind these remarkable landmarks, offering a deeper connection to Kathmandu’s heritage.
Journey to Bandipur
The journey then continued to the historic hill town of Bandipur. Along the way, terraced hills, river valleys, and rural villages unfolded across the landscape, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the Nepali countryside.
Known for its well-preserved Newari architecture and peaceful atmosphere, Bandipur provided a welcome contrast to Kathmandu. Time was spent strolling through its charming, pedestrianized bazaar, lined with traditional townhouses and local cafés, while the town’s beautiful sunset views over the surrounding hills and distant Himalayan peaks added a memorable touch to the experience.

Arrival in Pokhara
The journey continued to Pokhara, where the landscape opened into a relaxed lakeside setting. Settling into the city, Daniela first visited the iconic World Peace Pagoda, perched high above the valley which offered panoramic views of the lake, the city, and the Himalayan skyline.
Later, she spent time around Phewa Lake, enjoying a kayaking experience on its waters and taking in the peaceful surroundings from a different perspective.
The laid-back charm of Pokhara provided the perfect transition before the journey continued into the rugged landscapes of Mustang.

Flight to Jomsom and Ride to Kagbeni
A morning mountain flight from Pokhara to Jomsom marked the beginning of the Mustang horseback expedition. After meeting the horses and local riding team, Daniela rode toward Kagbeni along the Kali Gandaki River valley.
The trail introduced the region’s dry terrain, strong winds, and traditional Mustang riding style using locally crafted wooden-and-leather saddles. Kagbeni’s narrow alleys, monasteries, and traditional architecture reflected the region’s Tibetan cultural heritage.

Horse Ride to Muktinath
The ride from Kagbeni to Muktinath became one of the longer riding days of the journey. The trail gradually climbed through rugged terrain and high-altitude desert landscapes toward the sacred pilgrimage site.
At Muktinath Temple, Daniela visited the temple complex, including the 108 sacred waterspouts and eternal flame, both important to Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visiting the region.

Ride to Thorong Phedi
The following stage continued toward Thorong Phedi, passing through increasingly remote and rocky mountain terrain. Rising elevation and dry winds made the route more physically demanding, requiring slower pacing and careful riding.
Small settlements and isolated mountain landscapes highlighted the remoteness of the Annapurna and Mustang region.

Crossing Thorong La Pass
One of the most challenging parts of the expedition was the horseback journey toward Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. Steep trails, loose ground, and thinner mountain air required patience and steady riding.
The panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges from the pass became one of the defining moments of the journey before returning to Muktinath for the night.

Exploring Lubra Village
The route then continued toward Lubra Village, one of the last remaining Bon communities in the region. Daniela visited the ancient Bon monastery and learned about the pre-Buddhist spiritual traditions preserved in the Himalayas.
Among all the destinations, Lubra stood out as the most special for Daniela, offering a quiet, authentic, and deeply peaceful Himalayan experience.

Ride to Jomsom
From Lubra, the horseback trail continued directly toward Jomsom. The ride passed through the rugged landscapes of Mustang, with vast valleys and mountain views shaping the final stretch of the day.
The final riding section ended in Jomsom, where Daniela stayed overnight, marking the completion of the horseback expedition.
Weather Disruption and Return to Kathmandu
What was meant to be a simple return day quickly turned uncertain when weather conditions in Jomsom grounded all flights. Daniela and the team had to wait in Jomsom as arrangements were made for a road journey, with Kathmandu still ahead but no clear timeline for reaching it.
After the wait, the journey resumed by road toward Pokhara. By the time Daniela arrived at Pokhara Airport, there was still a thread of hope left for a late evening connection. Hours slipped by waiting as the day faded into night. Then came the final update. The last flight to Kathmandu was cancelled due to persistent weather disruptions.
With no flights operating and uncertainty settling in, there was no alternative left but to continue the journey by road. The team set out from Pokhara into the night, as the route back to Kathmandu stretched ahead in darkness. After hours on the road, they finally reached Kathmandu at around 12, bringing the Nepal journey to an unexpectedly dramatic final stretch.

The journey was led by Ms. Manisha Buddha Magar, whose guidance and coordination supported the experience throughout the expedition.
