Bhaktapur: Experience the Art of Clay, Curd, and Chant

/ Trip Reports / By Maya Trips / 19th March 2026

On March 15, 2026, Joanna and her friends joined Maya Trips for an exploration of Bhaktapur. This full-day journey focused on the “City of Devotees” through its three cultural pillars: the art of clay, the taste of curd, and the rhythm of communal chants.

What Is Included in the Bhaktapur: Art of Clay, Curd, and Chant Tour?

This experience is designed for travelers who want to go beyond the monuments and connect with the living heritage of the Kathmandu Valley. The day moved at an unhurried pace, allowing for deep observation and direct interaction with the local community.

Experience Highlights

  • The Art of Clay: Kumale Heritage & Hands-on Pottery

Home to generations of the Kumale community, Pottery Square offered the group a glimpse into one of the valley’s most enduring living traditions. Here, pottery is more than a craft. It is a way of life shaped by heritage and daily practice. Although many artisans now rely on modern electric wheels for convenience, they continue to preserve their ancestral firing techniques, baking their creations in large straw-covered kilns that have been used for centuries. The experience became truly memorable during a hands-on session, where Joanna and her friends sat beside Kumale masters to shape their own clay pots, discovering firsthand the focus, rhythm, and delicate touch needed to guide the spinning earth into form.

  • The Art of Curd: Juju Dhau (The King of Curd)

The group tasted Juju Dhau, prepared in the very clay pots produced in the square. This curd is a symbol of purity and Newari identity, known for its rich texture which is achieved by the porous clay absorbing excess moisture.

  • The Art of Chant: Bhajans and Living Traditions

In the local Patīs (public rest houses), the group observed elders performing Bhajans (devotional songs). These chants provide the spiritual rhythm of the city, passing down oral histories through music.

  • Guided by Local Knowledge: Insightful Storytelling

The journey was led by Ms. Pramila, whose academic background and fluent English helped the group interpret the social fabric of the Kumale community, moving beyond simple sightseeing to a genuine cultural understanding.

Guest Review

“Excellent – the tour company were communicative beforehand and let us know what to expect, and our tour guide Pramila arrived at our hotel to meet us. She was fantastic – speaking perfect English, and with a vast knowledge of Nepalese culture and history. She was also just a very kind person, and made us all feel safe and welcome. The experience was varied and exciting, taking us to historic sights and to enjoy the King Curd and pottery making. Make sure you leave room to buy pottery from the incredible workshop, and take your time to enjoy a meal in the square in Bhaktapur as the sun sets.” — Joanna
