Kathmandu: Phool Batti Traditional Incense Making Experience

On 12 March, Amber from the Netherlands participated in the Phool Batti traditional incense-making workshop in Kathmandu. The experience offered a hands-on introduction to one of Nepal’s traditional crafts.

Arrival and introduction

The experience began with a hotel pickup in Kathmandu followed by a short transfer to the workshop location. Upon arrival, the setting was calm and simple, providing a quiet environment away from the busy city.

Amber was briefly introduced to the activity and given an overview of the session before starting the practical work.

About Phool Batti

Phool Batti is a traditional incense rope made using natural ingredients such as herbs and plant-based materials. It is commonly used in Nepal in homes and temples during daily prayers, rituals, and cleansing practices.

The introduction explained its cultural importance and how it continues to be part of everyday life in many Nepali households.

Hands-on workshop experience

The main focus of the session was the step-by-step process of making Phool Batti. With guidance from a local instructor, Amber learned how to prepare the mixture and shape it into thin incense ropes.

The process required attention and patience, especially in the beginning. The technique felt unfamiliar at first, but became easier with practice as she continued.

Amber completed the process at her own pace under supervision.

Interaction and learning environment

During the workshop, there was informal interaction with the facilitator. Conversations covered daily life, local traditions, and the continued use of incense in cultural and religious practices.

The setting remained relaxed, with an emphasis on practical learning rather than formal instruction.

Conclusion of the experience

By the end of the session, Amber had completed her own set of Phool Batti. The workshop provided a basic understanding of the craft along with its cultural context.

The experience on 12 March offered a simple, hands-on way to engage with a traditional practice that remains part of everyday life in Nepal.

Review from Amber (Netherlands)

“I did an incense workshop with Maya Trips. It was really fun, in a homely and relaxed atmosphere. They took their time with me and I really enjoyed learning how incense is made. I made two different types of incense.”
